About
The ASPIRA Coquí Summar Camp offers children
exciting opportunities to enjoy and learn about their
community and family history through creating vibrant
artwork, hearing and writing stories and poems, seeing
films and participating in field trips to help widen
their understanding of their heritage and world. Children
also culminated their summer experience with a theatrical
performance that incorporated the musical instruments,
sculpture and literary works they created with visiting
artists.
Activities
focus on exploring the campers’ identities,
countries of origin, family histories and homes. Children
also explore Latin American geography, cultural expressions
by examining how their families came to Philadelphia
and formed communities here. Our theme is engaging
and interesting because of children’s associations
with family gatherings; their homelands and identity
are rich and full of potential for creating meaningful
arts.
Children
of all ages are also fascinated with their history
and heritage. With the guidance of art specialist
campers will visualize, design, plan, select and assemble
sculptures, musical instruments and compositions that
express their history, heritage and pride.
