The Olney Charter High School Journalism Club covered the grand opening of the OCHS Childcare Center, on Jan. 27. Student reporters interviewed OCHS Childcare Director Jennifer Nieves, ASPIRA Inc of Pennsylvania CEO Alfredo Calderon and OHS Alumni Association President Joel Grubman.
Carrying notes, a camera and voice recorder, students collected sources while ABC and NBC also reported on the grand opening.
The grand opening started with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The OCHS Childcare Center initiative serves students and employees seeking reliable and secure childcare services during school hours. Speakers included students sharing stories about struggling to raise children while attending school.
“We currently serve a population of students who either already have children or are expecting,” OCHS Childcare Director Jennifer Nieves says. “These students depend on friends and family members to watch their children. When friends and family are unavailable, the students cannot come to school.”
The program’s main objective is to promote the completion of high school for students raising children. Admittance into the program also requires that student-parents maintain consistent daily attendance.
The grand opening was followed by a tour of the Childcare Center, refreshments and music. The students’ news reports will be posted next week.
